Episode 58 – What do you do when stepping out of your comfort zone creates huge amounts of stress?
Today on The Not-So-Serious Life, Jason and Steve answer Tracy’s question:
“What do you do when stepping out of your comfort zone creates huge amounts of stress?”
Growth, transformation and success don’t have to come from stepping WAY out of your comfort zone but instead can come from exercising just a bit more courage, little by little, in each moment where you are experiencing something new or challenging.
You know what WE think and now it’s time for YOU to weigh in…
How can use the tips and techniques we shared to help you with your own fears, whether it is related to public speaking or anything else that you are stepping into as an opportunity for growth and transformation for yourself?

You guys!!! These are always good but sometimes they hit me right between the eyes! This one was amazing! As an actress/singer/writer/coach/keynote speaker, I have had to step out of my comfort zone BOATLOADS of times, and each time is FILLED with anxiety. My first instinct, from childhood, is to go into hiding…huge anxiety that effects my sleep especially, for long periods, and thus my life. So it makes me not want to do it.
But I’ve learned a lot and want to help others do that too. I want to share it with the world. Thus, the conundrum.
I am on the cusp of having to do it again…to launch my business. And because I have been scared shitless about tech, about marketing, about coming up with content, I have been STUCK, in hiding again. Sigh.
Both of you spoke brilliantly about various techniques. Steve, as an actor/speaker, I have done the prep/over-rehearse thing many times (to great effect). However, the anticipation of having to do that makes me want to run the other way. I usually don’t. I stay the path. Next week I am performing my solo show again, so I keep going.
And your story about your terror of public speaking rings so true. I coach public speaking (again with great results), so not only have I experienced it, but I watch it in other people all the time. I also watch them bloom before my eyes. So all you say is true.
And Jason, I loved what you had to say. Stepping out of your comfort zone in smaller ways has been equally helpful. This is inspiring me to do that again.
One of the brilliant books about money that I am reading, “Overcoming Underearning” by Barbara Stanny is truly illuminating that point. Be willing to be uncomfortable. Step out the comfort zone. She has one quote on page 116 that knocked my socks off…”Bottom line, overcoming underearning isn’t measured solely by the amount of money you make, but the degree to which your life is no longer run by fear.” Ahhhh.
You guys are teaching that all the time! Thank you!!!
Thank you for today’s message. That MI mug of Steve’s was absolutely stunning. I felt like I’d seen it before somewhere!
Hello Steve and Jason!
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. I wanted to let you know that I did the training and survived!! Steve hit the nail on the head when saying practice is key! I learned that saying it outloud was so different than just practicing in my head. Recited in my car many times too! Jason, I love your advice of coming from a point of service, not making it about me but how I can serve others. Beautiful advice too! That takes a lot of the pressure off thinking I have to preform, I just have to serve!
Also, on a pervious episode you all said how doing creates confidence not the other way around. This revelation was so helpful and is so true!
Keep doing the show. The quick and humorous format makes it enjoyable to watch. The advice you give is so applicable to every day life!
Much love,
Tracy
