Episode 32 – How can I change a self-sabotaging, time-wasting behavior?
Today on The Not-So-Serious Life, Jason and Steve answer Derek’s question:
“How can I change a self-sabotaging, time-wasting behavior?”
You know what WE think and now it’s time for YOU to weigh in…
What activities or behaviors do you call “self-sabotaging” that may be Not-So-Serious after all? Can you find a productive way to reframe the things that allow you to relax and rejuvenate so that you aren’t so hard on yourself for doing them? Does that help with choosing to do them less often if they may get in the way of your work?

That was a good question, and a great answer! A gentle reminder that we can be way too hard on ourselves.
This was a wonderful discussion today. Thank you both for your fun and heartfelt interest.
Michigan?! Sweet! Hit me up anytime you wanna hang (party) in West Michigan!
You know Jason, Kelloggs world HQ is in Battle Creek, Mi….Is it coincidence? Did Steve get a deal?? hmmmm……..
Loved the not-so-serious answer to the question of stopping a behavior. I once heard from an OUTSTANDING AND PHENOMENOL coach (initials are JG) that instead of attaching labels or giving meaning to a behavior, try making it more about degree of service. Does it serve me? If so, cool! If not, then give it all kinds of negative meaning and beat yourself up about it and hide in shameful depression…
Wait!! Thats not what you said, that’s what I used to do! 🙂
If it doesn’t serve, there are dozens of “techniques” to do less of, curb or get rid of the behavior. One great book that comes to mind is Reinventing Yourself by the awesome Steve Chandler 🙂
If we are still behaving in a way the doesn’t serve us, it may be due to “habit”. And there are LOTS of books about changing a habit and using limited willpower wisely. I haven’t found one definitive book with techniques that are 100% effective for 100% of people. So, a suggestion might be to get a pair of lab goggles and a lab coat like Steve had from a previous episode and playfully experiment with what works for you. (remembering that there is no such thing as a failed experiment)
Love you guys and the show!
Have a Fantabuwsome Day!
Hi Jason and Steve,
Thank you for another great episode.
One thing I like doing is to take what I would have previously critically thought of as procrastination and turn that into creation and fun action, because I always feel happier and achieve more that way. I like to make using social media almost like a reward or enjoyable intermission rather than make myself feel bad about using it 🙂
Have an awesome day!
